Summary

The elemental spirits are spirits from another world, but Uhaia planted them on this world, Ceres, to give them time to heal peacefully after a giant battle. She brought them to an island in the middle of nowhere where they were enshrined for their protection. Eventually their auras healed enough that the spirits automatically began affecting the island's geology/plantation/ecosystem/etc and they became entwined in the land itself until they eventually began to heal enough to regain consciousness.

They were later found by the people living on the island who were pretty ?????? about the sudden but overall positive changes to their environment and were basically treated as gods. The spirits were still extremely weak though so they could only communicate and travel by 'possessing' someone else, but that was less parasitic than it sounds because it also often lead to awakening dormant powers within someone due to the overwhelming spirity stuff ("influx of mana," if this was an rpg that required mana). Also the person was still conscious and the spirits could let them drive if they wanted, though obviously some found this Profoundly Creepy & Messed Up. But by those who didn't find this Profoundly Creepy & Messed Up, it was an extreme honor to be compatible enough with a spirit that it could possess them and this eventually lead to the guardian cycle much later where one person would house one spirit as a 'guardian' of them and would provide them with energy in return for sick powers.

This went on for centuries since the spirits are basically immortal and take a million years to heal properly apaprently, UNTIL Uhaia wanted them back in preparation for an oncoming disaster on the world she's currently residing on, Safler. However, the spirits were still too weak to fight without risking dying and, furthermore, they loved this life and didn't want to go back to a life of fighting. The scuffle resulted in the death of, uh, basically everyone except for Blizzard who Uhaia had remotely possessed from her world for this during an important guardian ceremony, and Twister who had been gone because he has no sense of time.

The spirits all fled and sought out an appropriate vessel (with mixed results) to rest in and went back into dormancy. As the only (apparent) survivor and dying of guilt, Blizzard struck out to try and find the spirits and figure out what to do about this mess. Uhaia, however, has too much going on to get those spirits back herself so she sends her protege, Frost, to go in her place. Issues ensue.

Blizzard was the only daughter of a social pariah in the village but they had a tight relationship until it was discovered how adept Blizzard was with water magic and she was hustled off to acolyte training to become a possible candidate for the elemental spirits. Blizzard deeply resented being forced to live with all these other acolytes and leaving her mom alone, which was only compounded by how coldly she was treated by most of the others. Twister would try to talk to her, but otherwise she remained closed off from everyone. Annnnd rest is kinda mentioned above, she was eventually possessed by Uhaia across dimensions since her magic was the most potent + similar to Uhaia's own wavelength and blah blah, spirits escape, village is destroyed, Blizzard is like whoops and is going on a quest to find those spirits before Uhaia gets her mitts on them

Son of a council member so he was a candidate by association, which made it all the more embarrassing that he wasn't really cut out for this stuff. He acted like a class clown to compensate, but he was friendly to everyone and was one of the few who talked to Blizzard. Same as before, he wasn't anywhere near the village when everything went down and man was that a cool and fun surprise to return to. Scared that He Was Next, he fled to the mainland and meandered around stupidly until Rei took him in and helped him fit in with modern life. He changed his name to Heath to fit in better and was having a good time in hiding until he and Blizzard found each other again and Heath is determined to actually Be There to help this time!!!! Theoretically, at least, he's still pretty terrible and doesn't even have an amulet anymore to help regulate his (light) powers, which will be very cool and also great when they find Light & Darkness since Blizzard can barely handle the four she currently has without adding two more to the pile. Gotta step it up, kiddo

Uhhh, she won a cruise trip in a raffle and went by herself, which was really cool until the ship was sunk due to getting caught up in the storm Uhaia created during her attack on Blizzard's village. Keeka survived due to merging with the water spirit and washed up on Luspira Island where she was found by Blizzard. But before All That, she had a pretty normal upbringing with parents and everything, though she was prone to sports injuries due to just Never Stopping, which is what fueled her interest in physical therapy.

A foster child who was eventually adopted by the same couple who adopted Rhyuki, so they're adopted siblings now because why not. Between his new moms and sister, Zak eventually broke out of his shell a little and honestly doesn't like being reminded how much of a shy loser he was, please stop mentioning it. With the help of Rhyuki, he discovered a passion for acting and that specifically is what helped him to open up & work more in conjunction with other people in the plays that he was eventually persuaded to join. With how kind and supportive he always is to everyone, he ended up becoming rather popular in his grade, but his abysmal self-esteem prevents him from ever noticing that and he still views himself as a social outcast and weirdo despite…. Many people talking to him and inviting him to things. They're just being polite apparently. He spends a lot of his time online, but he's still a big fan of gardening and outdoorsy things though and he likes to go foraging in the woods, which is where he was plowed into by the earth spirit and shortly after found by Blizzard. He's... Not a big fan of this development since it makes him even more of a weirdo and he avoids using his powers as much as possible as a result. He's also a pacifist, which makes any encounter with Frost Horrendous and he's terrified of him tbh

Chill was a normal mortal born to mage parents and oh man was that a point of contention for her. Because of this, she's known about magic her whole life but was never able to participate in anything related to it and always had to go to normal mortal schools & etc where she could never talk about any of it since Magic Doesn't Exist, Duh. On its own, that shouldn't have been That big of a deal except that it only exacerbated her frustration with herself for being so Plain. Thank goodness for overcompensation so she could at least pretend she was really cool and exciting. Anyway, as a result, Chill had issues forming connections with other normal kids. BUT LUCKILY, she almost died one day by cutting through a construction zone like an idiot, got caught by one of the construction workers like an even bigger idiot, and then got nailed by the fire spirit as it was gunning for said construction worker like the absolute biggest idiot. Sensing the change in the spirit, Blizzard showed up and managed to stop her from actually dying and hot dang was Chill SO PUMPED to learn she could finally use magic!!! now if only she could control it in the slightest

Definitely picked up his stingy nature concerning money but man is she willing to make exceptions for her experimental aesthetics. She got blown over by the wind spirit while chasing cryptid rumors in the woods, but Blizzard found her before Angie got to become a ghost of her own. Angie was, naturally, exuberant about this but wow what a bummer she can use zero of this for her podcast.

Fie's greatest ability in life is how he somehow keeps surviving what definitely should have been fatal incidents. After their parents died, Fie dedicated himself to making sure his sister, Angie, was safe and as ok as she could be considering their vaguely described situation. This was more difficult than it sounds considering Fie Cannot Stop getting into life and death situations with all these magical nonmortals meandering around and, now that Angie's old enough to live on her own, he has pretty much closed himself off from interaction and doesn't really know what to do with himself. Real fun guy here. He's working as a construction worker currently.

Whirlpool was originally chosen to help Frost because her species is incredibly sensitive to magic and can both sniff it out and absorb it like a tiny furry battery since it's her main source of energy. You know, like a power boosting fairy mascot.

Frost once belonged to a powerful group of mages that focused on, idk what term yet, life magic or whatever. They were predominantly benevolent but the whole 'our power comes from lives' thing was Pretty Dang Creepy to outsiders so, after a weird chain of freak deaths in a nearby town, the mage clan was attacked during the night and nearly wiped out. Frost managed to escape and was found by Uhaia who saw his potential to possibly become strong enough to finally kill her one day and took him in to train his abilities. Over a decade later, he was sent to fetch some elemental spirits Uhaia had hidden on a different world but that's not going too great since they've already bonded with some of the inhabitants and refuse to leave. Then again, his luck has been pretty bad to begin with since he has no idea what is going on in this world in general. Catch him going through the trash in all his finery because he doesn't know how money works. Though sidenote, that finery is only for the purpose of storing his magic so he doesn't need to absorb life energy every time he wants to destroy something, it is not actually a fashion statement.

Dumb alien cat thief who snuck into Frost's bag in order to avoid The Law and is now also on this grand otherworldly adventure with him. Frost isn't going to waste the magic it would take to send her back so he is protecting her for the time being, which is easier said than done because she is a trouble magnet and won't stop sticking her nose into everything she passes. On the plus side, she is incredibly sneaky and an adept thief so she's great at gathering info and stealing whatever they need as long as it isn't too big for her. Unless it involves cake and then it's all hers and Frost can back off and eat dirt. Everyone falls for the cute fluffy kitty gambit. >:3c Or at least they would if she could keep her mouth shut for longer than two seconds.

Uhaia was once part of a quest to save the world (world is being renamed, it's not this one) but their party was unable to stop the Big Bad through conventional means. During the final battle, Uhaia used Forbidden Magic to absorb the energy of everyone around her and was able to kill it in a final attack, but it left everyone else (and all the plantlife/wildlife around them) dead and she also accidentally absorbed the big bad in the process and All That Power Combined made her life exponentially longer. She basically became super powerful and mildly corrupted, oops. She obviously felt Kinda Bad about this and dedicated her life to traveling and trying to help others to make up for what had happened but, after centuries of this, she basically holed herself up on a mountain in Safler to become a hermit, though she would still help others from time to time if they either seeked her out or if the situation was dire enough. Just like it is now! She really needs the elemental spirits she hid on Ceres back now that a possible calamity is approaching, and the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or whatever, so tough luck small group of people (furries) on that world she murdered. And if the spirits happen to die as well during the aforementioned calamity, she'll deal with that when it happens since she sure doesn't see an alternative as of now.
