- Reading: Reading was Alaster's main escape when he was younger. He vastly preferred nonfiction and would devour anything in that genre he could find, regardless of topic, while avoiding any fantasy or fiction that wasn't grounded in reality. The last thing he needed was a ghost story or whatever to remind him that he was a freak and no plucky hero was going to convince him it wasn't a nightmare to live. If he tried reading them now they probably wouldn't make him as bitter, but he'd be too annoyed by how inaccurate they actually are that he'd lose focus anyway.
- Playing Piano: Despite it starting as just another task subject foisted upon him for his studies, Alaster started to genuinely enjoy playing piano once he stopped sucking so hard he wanted to die. It, uh, admittedly took a little bit to get passed that part. But eventually piano became something he could get lost in and focus on and it even struck his parents as productive, so if anything he was encouraged to spend as much time with it as he wanted. It took years, but eventually he became fairly accomplished as a pianist. Unfortunately, there's no stray pianos in the woods so, as much as he misses it, he hasn't been able to play in a long time.
- Solitude: After an entire childhood's worth of constant surveillance followed by a moderately different brand of surveillance at the institute, there was a new weird kind of freedom in finally being alone. Sure there's still animals and occasionally ghosts around that break the silence, but being allowed to just Exist was a breath of fresh air (not that he breathes, but y'know). There is such a thing as being TOO alone since his thoughts aren't exactly a pleasant place to be, but he will die (again) before admitting he gets lonely. Besides, that's what the aforementioned animals and occasional ghosts are for so it's fine.
- Not Being Heir: Alaster is not generally one to find silver linings, but even he would have to admit that getting away from his family was for the better. A way to do that without getting cursed into an abomination would have perhaps been preferable (particularly if you ask anyone he murdered), but continuing to be subservient to his parents until he died would have just been a, uh, less damnable hell and Alaster would be the first to admit he has no business running a company whatsoever. At least that's a small bullet dodged?
Dislikes
- Attention: After how much pressure he was under all the time growing up to be perfect, it takes very little spotlight to make him freeze up. While this was at its worst when he was younger and stuck attending high class parties where he could barely even function without stuttering or making an idiot of himself in some way, he really hasn't improved. Put him in a room full of people (this is not recommended considering current circumstances), and he'll still freeze and break records in how uncomfortable one guy can be. There's just more swearing involved until he can slink away somewhere else now.
- His Appearance: He's never been a fan of looking into mirrors and that has, shockingly, not improved under current circumstances. Ignoring the whole zombie thing that goes without saying, and then the fake punk thing that he knoooows looks tacky as hell, the real actual issue is that he's short. That's it, that's the kicker, and any reminder of it (imagined or not) will make him snap in a definitely normal and well-adjusted way. He may have self-esteem issues. And self-image issues. He might just have issues.
- His Temper: He knows, he KNOWS he overreacting approximately all the time but he doesn't know how to turn it off anymore after suppressing his emotions for so long. This is just another reason in a long line of why it's actually better that he's isolating himself in the middle of nowhere where he doesn't have to risk more painful interactions. Please rest assured that he regrets about 70% of what comes out of his mouth and it would keep him up at night if he was capable of sleeping. Actually, it's probably worse now that sleep can't turn it off.
- Carrion Eaters: Alaster normally tries to conserve energy as much as possible, so he spends a considerate amount of time laying around in the woods just like a normal and so very polite corpse. Unfortunately, normal corpses tend to invite things like vultures and crows and so on and nothing quite gets your attention like a small animal trying to take a chomp out of you. It's really annoying. This is not a problem he foresaw when he was ruminating on how awful everything was, which was rather foolish of him to be honest.
Alaster can never make up his mind. Depending on the day and what he is doing at the time, he either wishes he felt nothing at all or else he's cursing how little he cares about anything anymore and, while he thinks he's a worthless monster undeserving of any redemption, he will immediately reject such notions if someone else echoes them. Of course, the whole 'indecisive' thing might have stemmed from his over-controlling parents and how the few important decision he DID make himself had terrible awful results but that doesn't make his contrary nature any less annoying. Plus he's always had the bad habit of dealing with everything in extremes with very little middle ground, which also made pursuing any interests he had frustrating. Alaster can't STAND being bad at things but he's discouraged easily so he ends up trying really hard while simultaneously believing it's a waste of time that won't amount to anything until he eventually just gives up.
Naturally, this is not a beneficial mindset for someone who has never felt like they were good enough at anything and eventually Alaster's self esteem hit the negatives where he decided with 100% certainty that everyone would be better off if he had never existed at all. This is one of the main reasons Alaster isolates himself. The others are for more noticeable reasons such as how he's REALLY AWFUL in social situations and is prone to interpreting everything as an insult, flat out ignoring the other person, and general discomfort. If you ever REALLY want to confuse him, throw some genuine compliments his way and he'll have no idea how to react because his default state of mind is that everyone hates him at least half as much as he hates himself. Still, Alaster will be civil if a person is civil to him first (though he'll still be low-key suspicious of them the entire time- unless they're a ghost, he's more accepting of ghosts than actual living flesh people). He doesn't purposely pick fights out of nowhere and would really just prefer to be left alone where he won't embarrass himself by instinctively lashing out at the smallest (and probably accidental) provocation.
