Likes

  • Creativity: Despite his current assignment having nothing to do with it whatsoever, he IS still an angel of muses and therefore creativity is a big deal. Muse angels are able to inspire creativity in others so sometimes, on the rare occasions he allows himself to relax, he likes to go to cafes or similar places where people (furries) often work on their projects and send out some good vibes, so to speak. As a random aside, his favorite art is architecture and he'll make time to explore any old or interesting buildings or structures he comes across.

  • Working: You know what's a great way to avoid thinking about the anxiety inducing state of your own existence? Not giving yourself any time to think about it. He just needs to continue working nonstop forever and he will be ok and find a way to fix everything and everything will be fine.

  • Structure: With how much NONSENSE is going on in his life right now, he is clinging to the standard rules and black and white morality as if it can save him from the doubt he's trying to suppress. Unfortunately, he can't actually live by what he says which does, in fact, make him a giant hypocrite when he does things like not reporting Viola and the demon commune she now belongs to and his recent begrudging deal with Rydain, a demon. He hates this about himself in case anyone was wondering and stresses Demons Are Always Bad to shut down the topic whenever it comes up.

  • Sunsets: There's no deep reason for this, he just finds them lovely and calming to watch. HOWEVER... if one wanted to derive a meaning anyway, it also signifies a peaceful and unambiguous ending that is necessary for the birth of a new day and a new start and hey, he'd sure like that for the next era of his life. He's so tired. Also they're pretty.

Dislikes

  • Being Weak: Principalities are not made for combat and he is painfully reminded of this (sometimes literally) every time he fights with Rydain or any other higher ranking or powerful being. To compensate, he specializes in archery or any other long distance forms of combat and tries to avoid direct confrontation, but that's not always an option and sometimes he has to resort to, uhhh, less honorable tactics or strategizing with others. You would think that latter would be a more popular choice, but being forced to rely on others because of his own inadequacies is... unpleasant.

  • Arrogance: You know what's a great way to get under his skin? Constantly brag about how great you are at literally anything, especially compared to him. He knows he has a long way to go in approximately every way, but so does everyone else so get out of his face. Honestly, it just makes him want to knock them down a few pegs and used to when he was younger and more hot-headed but he's trying to be calmer and more mature about it now. It doesn't always work, but he's trying.

  • Stupid Questions: He is stressed and tired and doesn't have the time or the patience to field things he's either already explained or should be common sense. Aaryn will try to answer in a patient and understanding manner, but sometimes a little bit of annoyance still seeps through. Just a little. His sense of humor may or may not be at an all time low.

  • He Might Also Just Be A Pawn: He doesn't want to talk about it.

Personality

Aaryn used to be a genuinely nice guy back in the day, even if he was more impulsive and hot-headed than is generally recommended for a principality. However, after a series of (unfortunate) events, he eventually grew to become bitter, cynical, and closed off from others. He still has issues with impulsiveness and hot-headedness, but he has simmered down quite a bit in recent centuries compared to what he used to be and is more inclined to at least try to talk things out, even if his stubbornness renders that rather moot most of the time.

He likes to put on a tough face anyway to give his remaining friends confidence and reassurance, but his sentimentality often gets the better of him and he can’t even bring himself to truly abandon those who fell from his host, as much as he says otherwise. To keep thoughts of them and lingering regrets of what he could or should have done to prevent it from his mind, Aaryn throws himself into his work and prides himself on performing to the best of his abilities, despite how little faith he has in others anymore and how pointless things seem to be.

Story

Aaryn is a principality for the goddess of muses, Yuliore, so he was basically a paperwork angel in charge of a host of archangels and angels who helped with various mortal things on Ceres. Unfortunately for him since all this could have been avoided if stayed at his holy desk like a good boy, he is physically incapable of sitting around while others do work so he often joined them in their duties, which was all fine and dandy untilllll he eventually met the mortal Soleil and got involved in Reincarnation Plot(TM) and her quest to stop the queen of wraiths. In the beginning he was content with helping from the sidelines, even going as far as blessing Soleil with light magic, but after the demon, Rydain, got involved and nearly killed the entire party, Aaryn stepped in to stop him (barely) and he's been stuck in the cycle of Soleil and the queen of wraiths reincarnating battles ever since.

He still got enough done between cycles that his leadership of his angels didn't falter much, but during a particular arduous cycle where he was absent for a while, the angel, Cello, convinced his group to join his rebellion again their goddess, and it was too late by the time Aaryn learned of it. In the end, most of his host had either been permanently killed or became demons, one of them even attacking him later since they blamed him for not being there for them. Aaryn didn't disagree with that, but he ended up having to kill them in self defense and so they couldn't take their anger out on anyone else since they had well lost it by that point, and that messed him up real bad because his host had been like family to him. To make things even worse, one of the few remaining angels, Viola, voluntarily fell in order to protect a group of demons of all things, and it was at that point Aaryn decided he didn't deserve to be in charge of anyone anymore and his angels were reassigned to a different principality.

MEANWHILE! The reincarnation cycles were still going while this was happening and then during Aaryn's mourning period and wow, it sure was a lot more difficult without an angel to help!! By the time he pulled himself together enough to help, most of the group had died besides Soleil and together they barely scraped by in sealing away Rydain again and killing the queen of wraiths. The bit of solace and familiarity he found in joining Soleil's party, who he had also come to view as friends even if they didn't remember him each time (only the wraith queen kept her memories), also came to an end since the very next cycle Soleil triggered her memories of all the previous cycles and had a breakdown. Desperate to break the cycle and live her own life for once, Soleil sold her soul to a demon to leave the reincarnation cycle permanently since demons cannot be reborn, and killed the queen of wraiths. This was devastating for Aaryn who now had basically no one left and felt personally betrayed by what she had done, but couldn't bring himself to like, do anything about it since he was still attached to her and they parted ways.

However! The queen of wraiths who desperately needs a name so I can stop referring to her like this, had slowly been questioning if what she had been doing was really worth it, and, after her near victory last time, realized how empty and meaningless her actions had become. Just when she was contemplating what she should do about this, however, oops Soleil found her and murdered her. Yuliore, delighted by this role reversal, decided to revive the queen of wraiths for one last chance at redemption and had her reborn for the first time without her memories to see what happened. And since Aaryn had already spent so much time meddling with them and no longer had any principality duties at the moment, she ordered him to watch over her so no one could interfere or kill her prematurely. So now here he is. :) Living on Ceres with the woman he helped kill how many times and protecting her from his former friend. :) :) :) He's not bitter or resentful whatsoever, how could you ask such a thing.

Aaryn is like one good push from falling at this point, but he doesn't have time to think about that right now. No matter how he feels about it, he's going to succeed at this if it kills him.

Contacts

Goddess Yuliore
His goddess and creator he is fiercely loyal to and he will not tolerate any slander towards her. Aaryn does his best to carry out her will without question, but lately her orders have seemed... Actually, never mind, he's not going to question how a goddess works and he's going to avoid thinking about it as much as possible. He still admires and respects her above all else, of course. As he should. And is his duty. :)

Soleil Desrosiers
Getting attached to mortals is always risky and Soleil is the frustrating poster child as to why. He misses their friendship deeply, even if they had to restart it every cycle, and it's difficult to reconcile that attachment with how much he has to hate her now. There's no going back now that she's a demon, of course, but that doesn't make it easier. Just hearing her name is enough to put him in a bad mood.

Clarissa Tanzer
The current reincarnation of the Queen of Wraiths... but if he didn't know that already he doesn't think he'd notice anything out of the ordinary about her. Despite some... bumps... in her life so far, he's honestly a little surprised about how normal she seems and keeps accidentally dropping his guard around her. There's admittedly a degree of awkwardness about spending so much time with someone he helped kill so many times in the past, but he's not going to let it distract him from watching over her and keeping her safe until judgement comes.

Artemisia Hasapi
A priestess who was Soleil's closest companion throughout the cycles. She's always been hot-headed and impulsive which led to her and Aaryn butting heads at times, but she's always been a dependable and steadfast ally. She's once again a priestess in a temple of light and, while she remembers nothing of the cycles, Aaryn couldn't stop himself from briefly meeting with her again. It was nostalgic to see how little she changed, but a little sad as well so he doesn't make a habit of it.

Sugarplum / Ciel
Soleil's "noble steed" and a constant staple throughout her lifetimes. Aaryn's not sure how they became so connected that an animal also reincarnated with her every time, but it's not his place to ask so whatever. Unfortunately, that connection led to Sugarplum also becoming a demon when Soleil did and they've been furious about it, to put it lightly. Aaryn wishes he could help them, but with circumstances being what they are, there isn't much he can do other than sympathize and hope they can avoid fighting in the future.

Lunessa Quandt
Another companion across the ages, albeit a strange one. She was always a shady one and often died during the journeys, but she... tried? Kind of? Still, spending so much time with her endeared Lunessa to him anyway and she never actually did backstab them as often as it seemed she was going to. It seems exhausting to go through the cycle of starting scummy and turning over a new leaf nearly every time but it's not really her fault, he guesses. He hasn't spoken to her at all in the current cycle, but she apparently has sided with Soleil after she saved her from living on the streets after her "gang" ditched her for a new leader. She has no memories of her past lives either.

Rydain
Aaryn loathes everything about this guy and if he knew how to kill him permanently, he would in an instant. Unfortunately, he hasn't found a way to do this yet, so he has to settle for sealing him away and living in dread until the next time he pops up and won't shut up about the stupidest things. Even beyond the whole murderous demon thing, Rydain is INFURIATING to deal with and Aaryn cannot stand how chummy he acts towards him, like it's all just a fun game to him. Despite how capricious and easy-going he acts, Aaryn has to take him seriously since in a fair one on one match with no weapons, Rydain would destroy him and they both know it.

Leonis
Leonis is a throne of purity whose goddess died and Aaryn is letting him stay in his apartment since he's completely oblivious to how the mortal world works and will probably die on his own with how naive and trusting he is. Aaryn has been trying to convince him to swear fealty to another god/dess before he falls and becomes a demon, but he's just so stubborn about the weird mission he made up in his head that it's not going well... Aaryn worries about him a lot.

Viola
She used to be part of his host but Fell. He resents her for it because he feels like he should, but he's actually torn and misses what their friendship used to be. He can't bring himself to actually fight her either after he had to slay a different fallen friend, so Aaryn is currently using the (admittedly shaky) excuse that he can't kill her since he hasn't actually witnessed her doing anything evil since he found her again. The other angels don't need to know about this one.

Yoruichi Kaneko
Aaryn needed a mortal job as cover and was eventually hired by Yoru in her bakery. He thinks she's an absolute idiot, BUT she's passionate about... everything, actually, so he'll humor how eccentric she is and encourages her creativity in her culinary creations. She has a good heart and baking is kind of fun so he's content with this for now.

Cello / Zeke
The man responsible for getting most of Aaryn's host killed or turned into demons. They were in different circles since Cello had been a virtue so they had only interacted briefly before, but Aaryn had never gotten the sense he was dangerous before so his betrayal came as a shock. Aaryn has no idea where he vanished to after he was cast out and became a demon, but if he finds him (and he is very much looking) he's going to personally wring his neck.

Jibril
A cherub of darkness Aaryn can barely look at without getting into an altercation. He seems to be under the (ERRONIOUS) impression that Clarissa should be under the goddess of darkness' jurisdiction and the absolute arrogance of trying to usurp the mission his goddess personally gave him sets him off every time. Unfortunately, they're neighbors so they see each other more often than either of them would prefer and, just to top it off, apparently he visits Clarissa while Aaryn's gone and she even likes him for some ungodly reason??? He hates him so much.

Khazael
Khazael is a reaper who often frequents the city Aaryn is currently residing in for his own reasons and has decided they're friends. Aaryn isn't particularly thrilled about hanging out with an annoying slacker that refuses to take anything seriously, but it is nice to have the company of another immortal sometimes. He's a great distraction if nothing else, even if most of their conversations end in Aaryn chiding him for his irresponsible attitude, though it's generally to Khazael's bemusement.

Fleur
A faerie changeling who Clarissa hates. He apparently didn't know he was a faerie until recently and up until then their only face to face interaction had been Aaryn banning Fleur from Yoru's bakery so he'd stop (accidentally) glamouring staff for free desserts. Unfortunately, Fleur realized in retrospect that meant Aaryn knew what he was and started asking him questions about how to control his powers since apparently the faerie who told him about all this is useless. Aaryn hasn't liked this development, especially since he doesn't like faeries on principle, but he feels obligated to help him anyway. He hopes Clarissa doesn't find out.
